Royal Perth Hospital Laminar Flow Theatre UpgradeWellington Street, Perth WA - Completed 2013

One of five concurrent projects at Royal Perth Hospital, this project involved upgrading two existing theatres into laminar flow theatres (reducing the risk of airborne contamination) and refurbishment of existing finishes. Oldfield Knott Architects were awarded the commission to design, document and undertake contract administration.

As a large portion of the project required mechanical upgrades and plant room alterations, and in order to achieve the best solution, Oldfield Knott Architects worked closely with the mechanical engineer and the Royal Perth Hospital throughout the duration of the project.

The construction period, dictated to by the hospital’s routine shutdowns of the two theatres and existing surgery bookings, required strict adherence to a nonnegotiable date for Practical Completion. Additionally, it was critical that all other theatres and adjoining prep areas remained undisturbed during construction without risk of increased noise, traffic flow or risk of infection.  As such, extensive tender evaluations were undertaken to ensure the construction contract was awarded to the best suited contractor. Frequent site visits and team meetings were key to successfully achieving the construction time-line and cost goals.
