The Vines Resort Hotel New PavilionVerdelho Drive, The Vines - Completed 2016

In realising a new pavilion to augment the existing resort function facilities, this new outdoor wedding and function facility echoes the existing fabric by utilising the same material language of orange tiles, steel and timber framing and brick and limestone block work.

The form artfully departs from the existing as it surmounts the natural contour of the site on an elevated limestone plinth which celebrates the visual connection with the landscape beyond as the site gently falls away from the alter end of the pavilion. The order of the concrete rendered columns mirrors that of the existing connecting verandas; however, in speaking to the monumentality of the pavilion in form and use they thicken and lessen in procession.

The roof, with its soaring 8m central ridge above the aisle between well detailed timber pews, dips down on either side as the “wings”, with their expressed structure, embrace the pavilion, providing a sense of enclosure while simultaneously opening out to provide a further visual connection with the landscape beyond.

In satisfying the client’s brief of an additional outdoor function space the great achievement of the pavilion is that it balances connection and departure from the existing while comfortably occupying and celebrating the landscape in which it is sited.
